Spotting Dating Scams
Learn the red flags of romance scams, fake profiles, and how to protect yourself online.
Requests for money = scam
Any request for money — for a visa, medical bill, plane ticket, or 'emergency' — is a scam. No legitimate romantic interest asks for money before meeting in person.
Refusal to video chat
If the person always has an excuse — broken camera, no data, cultural reasons — this is a major red flag. Scammers use stolen photos and can't appear on video.
Too perfect, too fast
If someone declares love within days, calls you their soulmate, or rushes the relationship, slow down. Emotional manipulation is a common scam tactic.
Inconsistent stories
Details about their job, family, or location that don't add up over time reveal a fictional persona. Ask clarifying questions and notice evasions.
Off-platform requests
Pressure to move to WhatsApp, Telegram, or email quickly is often to avoid platform safeguards. Keep conversations on-platform until trust is established.
Report and block
If you suspect a scam, report the profile to the platform immediately. Block the user and warn friends who might encounter them.
